Dairy Cattle Evaluation

Evaluate cattle based on the qualities of the breed

The purpose of this event is to provide a competitive event for agricultural education students, emphasizing skills in dairy cattle evaluation, selection and dairy herd management. Members complete a written exam relating to the dairy industry; evaluate cattle on physical characteristics using linear classification and pedigrees; and give oral reasons explaining their placing of a class. Team members collaborate to analyze a herd record.

  • NY Contest Description: This contest is run in conjunction with the Dairy Handling event. A team may consist of four members with the highest three scores counting towards the team score. The team may represent a sub-district or a single chapter and must have a coach or leadsperson. Members must wear an FFA jacket or a state or chapter FFA shirt. Participants will be expected to complete a linear evaluation; placement of four animals in six different classes; complete a dairy management quiz; complete pedigree and sire selection classes; and three sets of oral reasons on three of the classes. LINK TO DESCRIPTION

    *Junior Division — junior teams will judge six classes and only complete one set of oral reasons.
