Livestock Evaluation

Which animals are the very best? Make your decision and justify it!

The purpose of this event is to measure the students' knowledge in the following categories: making accurate observations of livestock; to determine the desirable traits in animals; to make logical decisions based on these observations; to discuss and to defend their decisions for their placing; and to instill an appreciation for desirable selection, management and marketing techniques. Participants will evaluate various classes of livestock based on desirable selection and marketing trends.

  • NY Contest Description: A team may consist of four members with the three highest scores creating the team score. The contest will consist of placing six or more classes with two classes per species (one being breeding and one being market) depending on available animals. There will be four animals in each class. Three sets of oral reasons will be given after all classes have been placed; questions will be asked on three of the six classes. Each team will be expected to work together on a general livestock management problem or a general knowledge test. Individuals are expected to wear full official dress or a state or chapter FFA shirt and should bring a clipboard, blank sheets of paper, and two pencils to the contest. LINK TO DESCRIPTION

    *Junior Division: Individuals in this division will be expected to give only one set of oral reasons and may use notes to give those reasons. The junior contest will run simultaneously as the senior division however juniors are not eligible to move on to the national level so will be judged separately.
